International Student in the United States
Study permit
International students who want to study in the United States need to obtain a student visa, also known as an F-1 visa. Here are the steps:
Work permit
International students who are studying full-time on an F-1 visa are generally eligible to work part-time on-campus while they are enrolled in school. International students can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and up to 40 hours per week during school breaks. To be eligible for on-campus employment, students must maintain their F-1 status and be enrolled in a SEVP-certified school.
Minimum Wage
As of 2023, the federal minimum wage is $10.50 per hour, but many states and cities have their own minimum wage that is higher than the federal rate. Some states have minimum wages as high as $15 per hour.
Work after graduate
International students who have completed their studies in the US may be eligible to work in the US for a period of time after graduation. This is known as Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT allows F-1 students to work in their field of study for up to 12 months after completing their program of study. Students in certain STEM fields may be eligible for an additional 24 months of OPT extension. To be eligible for OPT, students must first apply and receive approval from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Students must apply for OPT no earlier than 90 days before their program end date and no later than 60 days after their program end date.
